3. Deshaun Watson Is Losing the NFL’s Most Awkward Quarterback Competition
Deshaun Watson is back on the field after missing all of 2025 with a ruptured Achilles tendon. Watson is preparing to play out the final year of his five-year, $230 million contract with the Cleveland Browns. Watson is currently battling 2nd year pro Shedeur Sanders for QB1 duties at Browns camp and it doesn’t sound like things are going well.
Sanders was arguably thrust into starting action prematurely last season and could benefit from more time learning from a polished veteran. However, Watson is far from the mentor type. It’s fair to say the Browns would launch Watson into the sun if they could, but they have no choice but to see if there’s anything left to gain from one of the worst, (fully guaranteed), contracts in NFL history.
Adding to the hilarity of the situation is Deshaun Watson’s recent comments indicating he’d like to sign another contract with the Browns and remain in Cleveland. There’s Wendy’s franchises that operate with more sound decision-making than the Browns, but there’s no shot Watson is playing for Cleveland after this season.
During his time in Cleveland, Watson has led the Browns to just 9 wins via 19 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a 80.5 passer rating. Suffice it to say, it’s difficult to imagine Watson finishing the season as Cleveland’s starter.
